Sustainability in events has become more sophisticated over the years and it can be daunting if you have only just started to incorporate some of these elements into your events.
The myriad benefits of producing sustainable events can include gaining respect for your commitment to manage a genuine concern with accountable actions for a cause; aligning your brand with other like-minded organisations; attaining economic savings in the long run especially in the area of reducing, re-purposing, recycling and re-using certain elements and aspects of your events; and having a positive message to communicate with and the opportunity to build a community within your target audience who shares your company’s vision.
However, event professionals should understand how introducing a sustainability plan to their meetings will fit into their company or client’s mission and values.
Destination management company, Pacific World, highlights some fundamental questions to consider before crafting a sustainability policy:
Having established an understanding from the above fundamentals, here are the three ways to kick-off sustainable events:
- Environmental management programme or certification.
- Recycling and waste management policies.
- List of local and community partnerships and sustainably sourced food practices.
- Any report tailored to track sustainability impact per event.
Pacific World believes that a sustainable event is an event with a balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress.
It also incorporates social aspects, responsible procurement practices and charitable contributions. For example, well-planned volunteer activities can be effective team-building activities which have a positive impact on the community.
